Moore’s gem leads Rays over Red Sox

BOSTON — Some nights you cannot control what the opposition does against you and that was what happened with the Red Sox Monday night as Rays ace Matt Moore was phenomenal and shut down the Sox in the Rays’ 3-0 win at Fenway Park. It was the sixth straight start with a win for Moore.

Moore was impeccable with his command as he limited the Red Sox to just two hits in his complete game shutout. No Red Sox player reached second base until two outs in the seventh inning when David Ortiz singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Only three times did a player reach base  — Ortiz in the seventh and Napoli twice (single in the second and a walk in the fifth).

“He shut us out. He threw a lot of quality pitches. He stayed out of the middle of the plate, we had three base runners all night and never really had a chance to get anything going,” manager John Farrell said. “He was efficient with a very good fastball and good change up. He kept off-stride enough and a lot of power to good locations in the strike zone.”

Red Sox starter Brandon Workman, making his second big league start, gave the team a solid outing after a rough first two innings where he threw 50 pitches. Workman went six innings allowing two runs on seven hits while striking out four. He allowed a run in the first inning on a sacrifice fly from James Loney and another in the fifth on a two-out RBI single, again from Loney. Jose De La Torre came on to pitch 2 2/3 innings where he allowed one run on a Desmond Jennings sacrifice fly in the ninth before Craig Breslow came on to get the final out.

The teams will play the second of their four-game series tomorrow night (7:10, NESN) where Jon Lester will opposed Roberto Hernandez.

What they’ll be saying: The Red Sox were shutout for the seventh time this season and their third time in their last 12 games. Their two hits matched a season-low and were the fewest hits at Fenway Park since August of last year against the Twins … It was Moore’s first career shutout and he had never pitched into the ninth inning in his career until tonight. He became just the second Rays player to throw a shutout at Fenway Park … Despite the loss the pitching the Sox got from Workman and De La Torre was very good and was able to save the bullpen after Sunday night’s extra-inning affair.
