Drew leads Red Sox over Orioles in eventful night

It was a eventful night in Baltimore featuring pretty much everything in the Red Sox’ 7-3 win over the Orioles. Despite the loss the Red Sox still remain a half game behind the Rays for first place in the American League East. The game was delayed 30 minutes at the start due to rain.

The offense finally got things back in gear erupting for ten hits and three home runs led by Stephen Drew who went 3-for-4 with two home runs and five RBIs. Mike Carp also went 3-for-4 playing a big role in the win. Things got interesting in the seventh inning after David Ortiz was ejected after striking out in an at-bat he was up 3-0 in and then saw two questionable strike calls. He then went to the dugout and smashed the telephone with his bat sending clippings of the bat all over the dugout.

Even though he didn’t have his best stuff, Ryan Dempster pitched well enough to pick up the victory. He went 5 1/3 innings allowing two runs on six hits while striking out four. He only threw 84 pitches, after running into trouble in the sixth and not having his best command. The Red Sox bullpen pitched the final 2 2/3 innings allowing just one run. Craig Breslow pitched a scoreless 1 2/3 innings, followed by Junichi Tazawa who allowed a run over an inning of work before Koji Uehara pitched a scoreless ninth.

The teams will play the rubber game of their weekend series tomorrow afternoon (1:35, NESN) where Jon Lester will be opposed by Jason Hammel.

What they’ll be saying: The Red Sox desperately needed the win, especially after the Rays had won earlier in the day. The Sox offense finally got going as they had been scuffling of late. It was a welcomed night from Drew, who before tonight only had one hit since coming off the disabled list last week. They need him to get going with Jose Iglesias in a slump of his own at third base … Dempster battled all night long as he never really had a feel for any of his pitches, particularly his fastball. He was able to get enough out of his splitter and change up to pick up his sixth win of the year.
