Alex Rodriguez goes 1-for-4 in return as Yankees blown out

The excitement off the field ended up being a lot higher than that on the field in Chicago on Monday night.

Alex Rodriguez made his return to the Yankees lineup on the same day he was suspended for 211 games by MLB for his involvement in the Biogenesis scandal. He played third base and batted cleanup.

Rodriguez was 1-for-4 on the evening with a single on a sinking liner to left field in his first at-bat. He hit fly balls to the outfield in the fourth and sixth, and struck out looking in the eighth to end his night.

Manager Joe Girardi was not very talkative about Rodriguez after the game.

“I thought he looked OK,” Girardi said. “I thought his swings looked pretty good. … That’s about all I can say.”

Rodriguez was booed during the introduction for his first at-bat, though nothing out of the ordinary for an opposing player.

“As long as I’ve been with Alex he’s been booed. … We are booed in a lot of ballparks,” Girardi said. “So it’s nothing new for us.”

The real story of the loss was Andy Pettitte. The White Sox battered the veteran lefty for seven runs and 11 hits in the 8-1 loss. Pettitte lasted just 2 2/3 innings.

He allowed three runs in the first, two runs in the second and two runs in the third.

Pettitte broke a streak of two solids starts after his ERA had peaked at 4.47 on July 19. He left Monday’s game with a 4.71 ERA and a 7-9 record. Pettitte has never finished under .500 in his 17 previous seasons.

Rodriguez was hardly the only Yankee in the lineup to have a quiet night against White Sox starter Jose Quintana. Quintana, who missed all of 2007 due to a performance-enhancing drug suspension, went 6 2/3 innings and allowed just one run.

Vernon Wells, playing his first major league game at first base, was the only Yankee with any success on the night, finishing 3-for-4.

Rodriguez was seeing his first game action since Oct. 18, 2012, when he went 0-for-2 coming off the bench in Game 4 of the ALCS. He underwent his second career hip surgery in January and had a brief delay last month when he suffered a quad strain during rehab.

With his appeal in motion, it’s likely Rodriguez will be available most, if not all, of the remaining regular season.
