Despite ninth inning magic, Red Sox fall to Blue Jays in extras

The Red Sox’ ninth inning magic continued Wednesday night, but unfortunately for Boston the magic couldn’t carry over into extra innings as the Sox eventually fell to the Blue Jays, 4-3, in 10 innings. This was the second straight extra inning game between the two teams.

With the Red Sox trailing 3-1 and down to their last out in the ninth inning, the struggling Mike Napoli stepped to the plate a came through with a clutch, two-run, opposite field home run to tie the game at three and send the game into extras. The Blue Jays didn’t waste much time scoring in the extra frames as Brett Lawrie’s infield single scored Rajai Davis for the game-winning run off of Red Sox reliever Brandon Workman in the bottom of the tenth.

Despite taking the loss it was still a good outing for Workman as he went three full innings of relief of Jon Lester allowing just the one run on two hits while striking out four. It wasn’t a bad start for Lester either, as the left-hander went 6 1/3 innings, surrendering three runs (two earned) on six hits and striking out three. He deserved a better fate as this was the sixth time in his last eight starts where he has been given three runs or less of run support.

David Ortiz blasted a solo homer in the sixth inning to account for the Red Sox’ first run of the game. Jarrod Saltalamacchia paced the offense with two hits in the loss.

The teams will play the rubber game of their three-game series tomorrow night (7:07, NESN) where Jake Peavy will go up against former teammate in Chicago Mark Buehrle.

What they’ll be saying: Give the Red Sox credit once again for coming back and never giving up in games, but they certainly had their chances earlier in the game to do some damage. As a team they went 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position and left 10 runners on base. Napoli entered the at-bat in the ninth inning 5-for-40 with 18 strikeouts in the month of August … It was an encouraging night for Workman who had his first real impressive relief stint since being moved to the bullpen. It is likely Workman will be used as a multiple inning reliever down the stretch.
