Rough outing for Doubront as Red Sox drop series opener with Yankees

BOSTON — After dropping six-of-ten on their road trip, the Red Sox hoped to get back on the winning track beginning Friday night at home against the Yankees, but they never had the chance to do so as the Yankees jumped out to a 7-0 lead and never looked back in their 10-3 win.

Red Sox starter Felix Doubront had by far his worst outing of the season as the left-hander allowed seven runs (six earned) on eight hits in just four innings of work. He also allowed two home runs, a two-run shot to Mark Reynolds in the second, followed by a three-run shot to Alfonso Soriano in the third. It was just the second time all season he allowed multiple home runs in a game.

“Mislocation on a few pitches. Two swings cost us five runs,” manager John Farrell said of Doubront’s outing. “More than anything just a difficulty finding the bottom of the strike zone. The last time he pitched [at Fenway] against Arizona he was outstanding in the bottom of the zone, the last two times out it’s been missed over the plate and he’s paid for it.”

Rubby De La Rosa relieved Doubront and threw 2 1/3 scoreless innings, allowing just two hits. Franklin Morales then came on to throw 1 2/3 scoreless innings before Drake Britton allowed three runs in the ninth.

The Sox got their first run on a Jonny Gomes single in the fourth inning, which plated Dustin Pedroia. Pedroia scored the second Sox run on an RBI single from David Ortiz, who then got thrown out trying to extend it into a double in the seventh inning. Later in the inning Jarrod Saltalamacchia singled home Stephen Drew for the third Sox run. Yankees starter Andy Pettitte pitched well picking up his eighth win of the year as the veteran left-hander went 6 2/3 innings allowing three runs (zero earned) on six hits while striking out five.

The teams will continue their weekend series tomorrow afternoon (4:15, FOX) where John Lackey will toe the rubber for the Sox and go up against Hiroki Kuroda.

What they’ll be saying: It’s been a tough stretch for the Sox as they have now dropped six of their last eight games and having trouble scoring runs. In the eight games they’ve scored three runs or less five times. Farrell noted its a similar stretch the team went through in May where they went 2-9 in the middle of the month … It was the second straight poor outing for Doubront as prior to tonight he had gone 16 straight starts of allowing three earned runs or less. It was his seventh career start against the Yankees and the first that wasn’t a quality start. He says the issue is mechanical and has an idea of what it is.
