Santonio Holmes shows signs of progress on road back from injury

Jets wide receiver Santonio Holmes is very quietly making progress from last year’s season-ending Lisfranc injury and the subsequent setbacks.

Holmes, who did not practice on Monday but rode the exercise bicycle as the team returned to New Jersey for training camp, did run routes on the field prior to Saturday’s preseason win over the Jaguars. His pregame regimen, which included sprinting and cutting on the field, is the first piece of evidence the injured wide receiver might be available to play sooner rather than later.

Holmes was evasive during training camp about a timetable for a possible return. Last year, prior to the Week 4 injury, Holmes was on pace for just the second 1,000-yard receiving season of his career.

“I never saw him but it’s no surprise to me. He’s been working his tail off,” Ryan said. “When our trainers and our doctors feel that he should be cleared to play, he certainly will be. I will be looking forward to it and I hope it’s not too far down the road.”

The news isn’t so positive for Quinton Coples as last year’s first-round pick will miss the remainder of preseason with an ankle injury. His return date is not known and Ryan said he is “out indefinitely.”

“We don’t know the time frame on it,” Ryan said.

He suffered the injury in the second quarter of Saturday’s preseason win.

Coples is making the transition from playing with his hand in the dirt to more of an outside linebacker role and Ryan said his duties will fall primarily on Garrett McIntyre and Antwan Barnes.

“Obviously with Coples, we’ll see how that progresses,” Ryan said. “We don’t have a timetable on the injury. It’s disappointing because the young man was playing well for us.”
