Derek Jeter quiet in return from DL as Yankees lose

Derek Jeter returned from the DL — again — Monday night. It did not, like his second return on July 28, start with a bang.

The Yankees lost, 5-2, to the Blue Jays as Jeter went 0-for-3 with a walk in his third return from injury this season.

On July 28, in his return from a quad injury suffered against the Royals on July 11, he went 2-for-4 with a home run in his first at-bat. Jeter was returning Monday night from a right calf strain suffered in his fourth game back from that quad injury.

It wasn’t an injury that sunk the Yankees Monday though, it was the pitching of Phil Hughes. The righty has struggled much of the season and Monday was no different. He allowed five runs — three earned — in 4 2/3 innings.

Hughes (4-13) fell apart in the fifth as he allowed a double to Jose Reyes and a single to Ryan Goins before a fly ball by Edwin Encarnacion resulted in a misplay by the usually sure-handed Ichiro Suzuki. Reyes scored and Encarnacion reached on the error. Adam Lind followed with a double and Moises Sierra hit a sac fly to end Hughes’s day.

The Yankees went into the inning tied 2-2 and came out trailing by the eventual final, 5-2.

For now Hughes will likely stay in the rotation with few other options available to manager Joe Girardi. David Huff, who relieved Hughes and pitched 3 1/3 shutout innings, might be the best option. When asked after the game if he has thought about Huff replacing Hughes in the rotation, Girardi responded, “Obviously you’re thinking all the time.”

The only Yankee to receive more ink than Jeter this year is probably Alex Rodriguez, who homered to the opposite field in the top of the fifth inning to tie the game.

Former Met R.A. Dickey (10-12) earned the win with one earned run in 6 1/3 innings. He lowered his ERA to 4.39 on the season.
