Red Sox offense breaks out of funk in win over White Sox

BOSTON — Going into Saturday night’s game, the Red Sox offense hadn’t been performing like it had all season as they are second in the majors with 5.03 runs per game, but hadn’t scored more than four runs in three straight and six of their last nine. They seemed to bounce out of their recent slump with a 7-2 win over the White Sox Saturday night at Fenway Park.

The offense got it done by scoring in every inning except the second, seventh and eighth. Xander Bogaerts collected two hits, including an RBI single in the fifth, while Jacoby Ellsbury collected three hits and scored two runs. Mike Napoli, Shane Victorino, along with David Ross each had two hits as well in the 15-hit attack. Every player had one RBI except Victorino, Will Middlebrooks and Ross.

Pitching against his former team, Jake Peavy pitched very well, picking up his third win in a Red Sox uniform, going seven innings allowing two runs on five hits while striking out four.  He seemed to get stronger as the game went along as he retired eight of the last nine hitters he faced. Craig Breslow pitched the eighth and Drake Britton the ninth to close out the win.

“He’s been everything we could have hoped for since coming over here,” manager John Farrell said of Peavy. “He’s worked team into games, thrown a lot of strikes, and made some big pitches in key moments when he’s needed. Even when he’s had traffic on the basepaths he’s found a way to minimize the overall damage and that’s held true in the five of the six starts he’s made for us.”

The series finale will be tomorrow afternoon (1:35, NESN) where Felix Doubront will get the ball for the Red Sox and go up against Andre Rienzo.

What they’ll be saying: Despite their lack of offense of late, the Red Sox have still managed to win six of their last seven and nine of their last 13. They’ve done it with tremendous starting pitching as Red Sox starters have allowed three runs or fewer in 11 straight games for the first time since 1988 … Since getting some rest of the West Coast, Napoli has been swinging a hot bat of late. In his last six games, he’s hitting .333 (8-for-24) with two doubles, two homers and 7 RBI. Farrell suggested this may be because his foot issue of a few weeks ago has subsided.
