Red Sox erupt late to overcome Yanks, 12-8

Well, they did it again.

Down 8-3 in the 7th inning, and looking flat from the get-go, the Red Sox – stop me if you’ve heard this one before – came all the way back to win.

Boston scored five runs in the 7th to tie things up, and four more in the 8th to take a 12-8 lead that they would never look back from.

It’s good that the bats showed up late, because the pitching didn’t show up early. Felix Doubront went just 3.2 innings giving up six earned runs on three hits and six walks.

The Sox never led in this game until the 8th, and it took a Mike Napoli grand slam the inning before to put them in that position.

With Phil Hughes in for relief of Andy Pettitte, the Sox did damage. Dustin Pedroia’s infield single scored David Ross to put the Sox down four runs. With the bases still loaded, Napoli hit one out to right field that just got over the wall and Ichiro Suzuki’s glove.

Shane Victorino would crush one out to left field in the 8th inning, scoring Will Middlebrooks, and that was that. It was Victorino’s sixth home run in his last 12 games, and second in two games.

Napoli got on base all five times tonight, a single, double, home run, and two walks.

Will Middlebrooks hit a home run in the 5th inning.

Koji Uehara pitched a 1-2-3 ninth.

What they’ll be saying: If “they” means the Yankees, it’s probably, “Mercy! Mercy!”. Seriously though, we’re only halfway through the series and it’s already looking like the best one of the year for Boston and the opposite for New York. The Sox gained a game on both the Yankees and the Rays Thursday night, and they now lead the Yankees by 10 games in the division after Friday’s win. It’s games like the last two nights (and many others this season) that allow the Sox players to have that never say die attitude. That will certainly come in huge in the postseason.
