The Giants need all the good news they can get in the midst of a 0-6 season. They got a little Monday with the news running back David Wilson won’t need season-ending surgery on his injured neck.

Fox Sports reported Monday evening that Wilson had received the news he would not need the surgery after getting a second opinion from Dr. Robert Watkins. Wilson did not play against the Bears last Thursday after being injured Oct. 6 against the Eagles.

He will still likely be out a few more weeks.

Wilson came out of that game after he said he felt tingling in his extremities due to a neck injury. He said after the game he did not feel the injury was serious, but the team feared it could be spinal stenosis.

Head coach Tom Coughlin echoed Wilson’s lack of worry Monday afternoon before the official diagnosis.

“David is very optimistic, very upbeat. He’s that kind of guy,” Coughlin said. “And I also said, and you all heard me and you all agreed, that he did have a similar injury in college, which he overcame.”

The Giants only had one running back active in practice Monday – rookie Michael Cox. Brandon Jacobs, who filled in admirably against Chicago, was resting with a hamstring injury. The team is hopeful he’ll be ready to play Monday, but Cox could see time as well. Da’Rel Scott was also injured last week.

Wilson has 44 carries for 146 yards and a touchdown this season. The explosive back has a long rush of just 18 yards this season.
