Red Sox: Crawford rips Boston media

Carl Crawford's stay in Boston was painful for everyone involved.
Carl Crawford’s stay in Boston was painful for everyone involved.

Many in the Boston media pondered whether or not Carl Crawford would be able to handle the Hub’s sports pressure-cooker when he signed with the Red Sox in December of 2010 after spending nine years in tranquil Tampa Bay. Crawford admitted to CBSSports.com this week that the media in Boston ended up being his worst enemy.

“That smile turned upside down quick,” Crawford said. “I think they want to see that in Boston. They love it when you’re miserable … That media was the worst thing I’ve ever experienced in my life.”

Crawford played in just 161 games over two years for Boston after signing a seven year, $142 million contract. He was traded to the Dodgers last summer in the blockbuster deal which also involved Josh Beckett and Adrian Gonzalez heading to LA.

“Look how they treat (John) Lackey. Adrian (Gonzalez) hit 30 home runs (27 in actuality) and they talked about him not hitting home runs,” Crawford said. “I took so much of a beating in Boston. I don’t think anything could bother me anymore.

“They can say what they want, that I’m the worst free agent ever, and it won’t get to me,”Crawford added. “But it bothered me the whole time there … You have to tell everybody how much you like it, when you really don’t like it.”
