Roy Halladay did not give Phillies fans worried about what he has left in the tank much reason for optimism in his first start of the season in Atlanta Wednesday night.

The 2010 National League Cy Young Award winner allowed six earned runs over just 3 1/3 innings of work in the Phillies’ 9-2 loss to the Braves.

Atlanta (2-0) jumped out to a 3-0 lead after one inning on the strength of Justin Upton’s two-run homer. It was Upton’s second home run on the young season.

Halladay did strike out nine Atlanta batters, but surrendered two home runs on six hits while also walking three. He threw 95 pitches.

Braves first baseman Freddie Freeman was the hitting star of the game, going 2 for 3 with a home run and three RBI.

Chase Utley knocked in the Phillies’ only runs with a double in the seventh inning.

Braves starter Paul Maholm got the win. He worked 5 2/3 innings of scoreless baseball.

The Phillies (0-2) turn to left-handed starter Cliff Lee tonight as they try to get their first win of the season. Atlanta sends Kris Medlen to the mound for the 7:10 start.
