Rookie hurler solid as Phillies top Bucs
Rookie starting pitcher Jonathan Pettibone was solid in his first big league start as the Phillies defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates, 3-2, Monday night at Citizens Bank Park.
Jimmy Rollins drove home the winning run with a single in the sixth inning.
The Phils’ bullpen held onto the one-run lead over the final three innings.
Lefty Raul Valdes got the win after finishing the sixth for Pettibone, who exited with one out and no one on base. Antonio Bastardo, Mike Adams and Jonathan Papelbon each pitched a scoreless inning to help the Phillies (9-11) earn the win.
Pettibone was called up from the minors to take John Lannan’s place in the rotation. The Phillies placed Lannan on the disabled list last week with a gimpy knee.
Pettibone pitched 5 1/3 innings, allowing six hits, including two solo home runs by Russell Martin and Pedro Alvarez. He struck out six and did not walk any Pirates hitters.
Papelbon earned his fourth save of the season.
