Phillies fall to Diamondbacks in desert

The Phillies’ offense was virtually non-existent in Phoenix Thursday night.

Of course it was.

After all, it was Cole Hamels who took the mound for the Phils.

Hamels, who has received lackluster offensive support from his teammates almost all season, pitched well enough to get a win against the Arizona Diamondbacks (20-15), but left after six innings with his team trailing by a score of 2-0.

The Phillies (16-20) managed to cut the lead in half in the seventh inning, and even threatened to tie it in the ninth inning, when Domonic Brown stroked a one-out double, but ultimately lost to the Diamondbacks, 2-1.

Arizona used small ball to score single runs in the fifth and sixth innings. Starting pitcher Patrick Corbin knocked in the game’s first run on an RBI groundout, and right fielder Gerardo Parra hit a swinging bunt to first to score Phillies nemesis Cody Ross in the sixth.

Hamels is now 1-5 on the season. He allowed both runs, and walked five while striking out just three.

Corbin got the win for Arizona. The young righty is now 5-0 on the season after allowing just one run on four hits over 6 1/3 innings against Philadelphia, lowering his ERA to a very impressive 1.75.

Heath Bell picked up the save, his fourth of the season.
