Napoli, Nava power Red Sox past Yankees, 11-1

In an 18-hit attack, the Red Sox blew past the Yankees 11-1 Saturday night in the Bronx. With the win the Sox move to two games ahead of the Yankees for first place in the AL East standings.

The Red Sox blew the game open in the third inning where they scored five runs, including a grand slam from Mike Napoli, his second of the season. The Sox then added three runs in both the eighth and ninth innings to account for their 11 runs. Daniel Nava went 4-for-6 in the lead off spot with a home run and four RBIs to lead the Sox.. Napoli and Jackie Bradley Jr. each had three hits, while Mike Carp, Stephen Drew and Jose Iglesias finished with two.

Starter Felix Doubront went six innings, allowing one run on six hits and struck out six to earn his fourth win of the season. Junichi Tazawa, Craig Breslow and Koji Uehara each pitched scoreless innings of relief to complete the win.

The teams will play the rubber game of their three-game set tomorrow night (8:05, ESPN) where Clay Buchholz will get the nod for the Sox and be opposed by Hiroki Kuroda.

What they’ll be saying: They Red Sox bats finally woke up after being silenced of late. Of their 18 hits, six were for extra bases and they went 5-for-15 with runners in scoring position … After struggling to begin the season Doubront has picked it up of late, even though this was his first win since April 27. This was his third straight start pitching at least six innings, which is a welcomed sign as he struggled with his pitch count to open the year.
