Red Sox defeat Yankees 3-0, in rain-shortened contest

After Sunday night’s game was delayed 45-minutes at the start (despite never actually raining) and then two more rain delays during the game, the game was eventually called in the bottom of the sixth inning with the Red Sox defeating the Yankees 3-0 at Yankee Stadium.

The Red Sox scored a run in the third, fourth and fifth innings to account for the three runs. Jose Igelsias and David Ortiz (two hits) each hit solo home runs in the win, while Mike Napoli (RBI) had two hits to pace the offense. The Sox had eight hits in the six innings.

Starter Clay Buchholz went five innings allowing no runs on two hits while striking out four. He was very sharp in earning his eighth win of the season. Play was originally stopped in the top of the sixth and after about an hour delay play was resumed, but then after only four pitches another downpour came in the bottom of the sixth, which would be it for the night with a flash flood warning in the area.

The Sox are off on Monday before hosting the Texas Rangers for a three-game series at Fenway Park beginning Tuesday night (7:10, NESN). Ryan Dempster will get the start for the Red Sox and Justin Grimm for the Rangers.

What they’ll be saying: On the field for what was actually played, the Sox played quite well including Buchholz dropping his ERA to 1.62 this season and then Ortiz’ and Iglesias’ home runs.  With Igelsias’ play of late, it makes it very difficult for the team to justify sending him back to Pawtucket when Will Middlebrooks returns this week. This likely means Pedro Ciriaco will be released since he is out of options, and Igelsias will take over in the utility infielder role … Someone really dropped the ball at Yankee Stadium as first off, the game should have started on time as it never actually rained in the 45-minute delay and then you never see a game resume after a rain delay only to be stopped again less than ten minutes later.
