Ortiz walk-off lifts Red Sox over Rangers

After Dustin Pedroia was intentionally walked to get to him in the bottom of the ninth, slugger David Ortiz made the Rangers pay with a three-run, walk-off home run in the Red Sox’ 6-3 win over the Rangers Thursday night. The Sox took two-of-three from the AL West leading Rangers.

The Sox trailed 3-0 and 3-2 before tying the game in the seventh inning and then getting quality relief pitching before Ortiz’ heroics in the ninth. The top of the Red Sox lineup led the way with Jacoby Ellsbury and Jonny Gomes going a combined 8-for-10 and three runs scored. Gomes got the rally going in the ninth with a lead-off double. Dustin Pedroia had a two-RBI double to account for the first two runs.

Although he didn’t factor into the decision, starter Jon Lester delivered a solid performance. The left-hander went six innings and allowed three runs on seven hits while striking out four. The Sox got solid relief from Junichi Tazawa, Koji Uehara and Andrew Bailey (win) as they combined for three scoreless innings in relief of Lester.

The Sox will return home Friday night (7:10, NESN) as they host the Los Angeles Angels for a three-game series. Felix Doubront will get the start for the Red Sox and go up against Tommy Hanson.

What they’ll be saying: This was a good overall series for the Sox after being swept by the Rangers last month, as they proved they can hang with one of, if not the best team in the American League. Their starting pitchers all pitched well, even John Lackey in Wednesday’s loss only allowing one run. This was something they really struggled with in Texas … Ellsbury made a valiant return to the lineup after missing five straight games with a groin injury. It was his ninth career four-hit game and for Gomes it was by far the best of his season, showing why John Farrell has him in the second spot. It was also the 19th career walk-off for Ortiz.
