Red Sox relievers shine in 2-1 win over Rays

Following a solid spot start from Alfredo Aceves, the Red Sox bullpen got out of a few jams in their three innings of relief to preserve a 2-1 win over the Rays Wednesday night. The Red Sox took two-of-three from the Rays in their three-game series.

Aceves went six strong innings allowing just one run on four hits while striking out three. He did walk four hitters, but none of them scored. His only blemish came in the sixth inning where he gave up a solo home run to Rays third baseman Evan Longoria.

Junichi Tazawa, Craig Breslow, Koji Uehara and Andrew Bailey (save) combined to pitch three scoreless innings of relief. Overall, the Red Sox forced the Rays into going 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position and leaving seven runners on base.

Offensively, the Red Sox got their runs on one swing of the bat — a two-run homer from Daniel Nava in the third inning. Mike Carp also had a good night for the Sox recording two of the Sox’ five hits.

The Red Sox will now travel to Baltimore for a four-game, weekend series with the Orioles beginning tomorrow night (7:05, NESN) as Felix Doubront will get the ball for the Sox and be opposed by Kevin Gausman.

What they’ll be saying: The pitching could not have been much better for the Sox, as they got a second consecutive outstanding spot start from Aceves. It’s expected he will be sent back down to Pawtucket, but then return next Tuesday as the 26th man and start one of the games in the doubleheader against the Rays at Fenway. Rubby De La Rosa is also an option, but it’s a week away so too early to predict … The great season for Nava continued Wednesday night as he how is second in the AL in RBIs among outfielders and quietly making a case to be an All-Star.
