Webster, Red Sox routed by Tigers

Making his third spot start of the season, Allen Webster was roughed up by the Tigers Saturday night as the Tigers came away with a 10-3 win over the Red Sox. The Tigers have won two of three so far in their four-game weekend series.

Webster struggled early on allowing four runs in the first inning alone, digging the Sox a deep hole especially difficult to climb out of going against the AL Central leading Tigers. Webster went 4 1/3 innings and allowed five runs on eight hits while striking out five. The big blow was a three-run homer from Victor Martinez in the first. Things didn’t get much better for Sox pitching as Franklin Morales allowed four runs in his 2 1/3 innings of work before Alex Wilson allowed a run in 1 1/3 innings.

David Ortiz led the offense with two hits including a home run, while Jacoby Ellsbury and Jose Iglesias had two hits apiece in the loss.

The teams will wrap up their four-game series tomorrow afternoon (1:08, NESN) as Felix Doubront gets the nod for the Sox and the Tigers will counter with Justin Verlander.

What they’ll be saying: The offense was shutdown by Tigers starter Max Scherzer, who picked up his major league leading 11th win, but it didn’t matter much as Red Sox pitching combined to allow 10 runs on 15 hits. Webster showed flashes of good stuff, especially after the first inning, but he cannot have these horrible first innings like he did in his last start as well. Morales reportedly left he game with shoulder discomfort and a DL stint is possible as well as Mike Carp’s hamstring doesn’t look 100 percent. Injuries are beginning to pile up for the Sox as they still lead the AL East, but cannot afford anymore of these injuries.
