Brian Cashman rips Alex Rodriguez for tweeting about comeback

Yankees general manager Brian Cashman has had just about enough of Alex Rodriguez.

The injured third baseman drew the ire of Cashman Tuesday after tweeting he had met with doctors and was cleared to return to rehab action.

Cashman, speaking to ESPN New York’s Wallace Matthews, was not happy to hear his slugger tweeting his rehab plans to the world.

“You know what, when the Yankees want to announce something, [we will],” Cashman said. “Alex should just shut the f— up. That’s it. I’m going to call Alex now.”

The anger was unusual, if not unexpected, from the Yankees.

Cashman on Monday refuted a report from Tampa which said Rodriguez had been cleared to play in rehab games.

“He has not been cleared by our doctors to play in rehab games yet,” Cashman said. “He’s getting closer. There’s no doubt about it. But we don’t have a date for him to start playing games yet.”

Rodriguez is not on good terms with the organization as he struggles to return from multiple hip surgeries. He’s been caught up in another steroid scandal as well, with MLB reportedly investigating whether they can suspend him for his involvement with Biogenesis founder Anthony Bosch. It came out just last week that Rodriguez had met with Bosch during last year’s playoffs.

Rodriguez had just recently joined Twitter and the offending tweet was just his ninth. He hasn’t tweeted since.

Manager Joe Girardi was asked about Cashman’s comments after his team beat the Rangers, 4-3, Tuesday night.

“Well I don’t tweet, and I really don’t follow Twitter,” Girardi said. “So I probably don’t really know much of what is going on. As far as I know he has not been cleared.

“There’s always a chain of command with injuries. There has to be and that’s the process. It goes through our training staff, our doctors and our GM and then it goes to me. I’m down on the totem pole.”
