Bullpen folds, Phillies fall to Dodgers
After falling behind early in Los Angeles Thursday night, the Phillies held the lead late against the Dodgers following a Chase Utley home run.
But, as has been the case all too often the last two seasons, the bullpen could not hold on to the lead.
In the end, the Dodgers beat the Phils, 6-4.
Utley’s solo homer in the seventh inning put the Phillies ahead, 4-3.
Dodgers rookie phenom Yasiel Puig would have none of that, though. Puig stroked a two-run single to left with two outs in the bottom of the seventh to put the Dodgers back on top.
The Phillies rallied from an early hole they faced after the Dodgers put up three runs off starting pitcher Jonathan Pettibone. Dodgers center fielder Matt Kemp drove in the game’s first run on a double. The next hitter, right fielder Andre Ethier, followed Kemp with a two-run double.
Utley was 3 for 5 in the game. In addition to his ninth home run of the season, he had a single and a double.
Domonic Brown hit his 21st home run of the season.
Pettibone pitched five scoreless innings after the rocky first inning.
Reliever Justin DeFratus took the loss for the Phillies. It was DeFratus who surrendered Puig’s game-winning hit.
