Webster earns first big-league win in Red Sox’ victory over Padres

BOSTON — After making four previous starts without registering a win, Allen Webster finally was able to pick up his first major league victory in the Red Sox’ 8-2 triumph over the Padres at Fenway Park Thursday afternoon on the July 4 holiday. The Red Sox completed the sweep of the Padres, which was their sixth series sweep of the season.

It was by far Webster’s best outing of his career as he went six innings and allowed two runs on five hits while striking out four. The one negative for the young right-hander was his command as he walked four batters and threw 97 pitches, only 54 for strikes. Although he surrendered the four walks he was able to pitch out of jams to limit the damage.

“He had good stuff again today,” said manager John Farrell. “He pitched himself into a little bit of traffic, but made a couple big pitches to [Mark] Kotsay one for the ground ball out and the other the fly out to left field. I think with each passing start at this level he starts to get his feet underneath him and clearly he is a work in progress, but today he made some key pitches when he needed to.”

Andrew Bailey pitched a 1-2-3 seventh inning for his first scoreless outing since June 12 and his first 1-2-3 inning since April 24. Alex Wilson came on and pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings before Craig Breslow recorded the final two outs.

Offense was not an issue for the Sox as they belted out 18 hits in the win as every starter recorded a hit. Even more impressive was every starter had at least two hits except Brandon Snyder, but Snyder’s lone hit was a solo home run for his first homer as a member of the Red Sox. Jacoby Ellsbury extended his hit streak to 14 games with three hits, including a solo home run to lead-off the bottom of the eighth, while Dustin Pedroia and David Ortiz each recorded two RBIs.

The Red Sox will now take to the road for 10 games on the West Coast before the All-Star break. The trip will begin tomorrow night (10:05, NESN) against the Angels where Felix Doubront will take on C.J. Wilson.

What they’ll be saying: With the win the Red Sox finished the homestand with an 8-1 record and are now a season-high 19 games over .500 and also a season-high 4.5 games up in the American League East standings … Clearly the offense was impressive as the Sox totaled 18 hits for the fourth time this season, all of which coming in the month of June and beyond. The offense is starting to click and the contributions are coming from all parts of the lineup, which speaks to the depth the team has.
