Yankees react to Braun suspension as Rodriguez in limbo

The first shoe to drop in the Biogenesis scandal came Monday night as Brewers outfielder Ryan Braun was suspended for the rest of the 2013 season. The attention almost immediately shifted, at least in New York, to the other big name tied up in the same scandal: Alex Rodriguez.

So far, MLB has been silent on when — it’s almost certainly shifted beyond if — Rodriguez will be suspended. He would be able to appeal any suspension even when it is delivered.

But the Yankees clubhouse was inundated with questions about Rodriguez, who reportedly faces a mountain of evidence even higher than that of Braun.

“I can’t say anything because I don’t know what happened with Alex,” Mariano Rivera told reporters after the team’s 3-0 loss in Texas Monday night. “I have to support him. He’s my teammate. He’s my brother. I’m not saying he did or didn’t do it, but if it happens I can’t throw him in the street.”

Rodriguez is currently in Tampa, rehabbing from a Grade 1 quad strain suffered this weekend while trying to come back from hip surgery in January.

He’s made no public comment since Braun’s suspension, but did initially deny getting performance-enhancing drugs from Biogenesis when the reports initially broke in the Miami New Times earlier this year.

Yankees manager Joe Girardi did not comment directly on Rodriguez, but had strong words for Braun after Monday’s game.

“You don’t accept a deal unless you were guilty,” Girardi told reporters. “It’s disappointing. It’s just another black eye for our game. I know this game is very resilient and there have been a lot of scandals over the years, but you get tired of it.”
