Zack Wheeler falls apart in fifth inning as Mets lose to Royals

Everything looked good for Zack Wheeler and the Mets early, that is, until an ugly collapse in the fifth inning sent them to their fourth loss in five games.

Wheeler allowed four runs (three earned) in five innings as the Mets lost to the Royals, 6-2.

David Lough doubled to lead off the fifth and scored on a wild pitch by Wheeler. After a walk, a pop up lost in the sun by Marlon Byrd, another wild pitch and a Lorenzo Cain single, the game was 4-0 and out of reach.

Kansas City added two more runs off Gonzalez German in the top of the sixth inning. The first four batters of the inning — Jarrod Dyson, Miguel Tejada, Eric Hosmer and Alex Gordon — all reach base, with two scoring.

Former Angels starter Ervin Santana looked strong on the afternoon. He finished with one earned run in six innings as he improved to 8-6 on the season. Tim Collins allowed a run in the eighth inning on two hits, but Greg Holland shut the Mets down 1-2-3 in the ninth.

The Mets are now 49-60 as they host Colorado this week.
