Red Sox squander one-run lead late, fall to Giants on walk-off walk

When the Red Sox only scored one run with the bases loaded and no outs in the first inning, you kind of expected it would come back to hurt them. It did, but not in the way you would think as the Red Sox blew a 2-1 lead in the eighth and then the Giants eventually walked off with a walk-off walk in the bottom of the ninth for a 3-2 win over the Red Sox Tuesday night. Combined with a Rays win the Sox are now tied with the Rays atop the AL East standings

Red Sox starter Jake Peavy gave the Sox a solid start going 5 2/3 innings allowing just one run on five hits while striking out four. Craig Breslow then came in to throw 1 1/3 scoreless innings before Junichi Tazawa allowed the tying run in the eighth inning on a sacrifice fly from Buster Posey. Franklin Morales then came on for the ninth and loaded the bases with two outs where manager John Farrell then called upon Brayan Villarreal, who was making his Red Sox debut, and first major league appearance since April 20. Coming in with control issues in the past he walked Marco Scutaro on four pitches to allow the game-winning run to score.

Mike Carp’s sacrifice fly with the bases loaded plated the Red Sox’ first run in the first inning and then in the third inning Shane Victorino led off the inning with a line-drive home run giving the Sox a 2-0 lead at the time. Will Middlebrooks led the offense with two hits, but as a whole the offense struggled, only managing three hits after Victorino’s home run in the third.

The two teams will close out their three-game series Wednesday afternoon (3:45, NESN) as Felix Doubront will be opposed by Barry Zito.

What they’ll be saying: Despite only going 5 2/3 innings, Peavy got the job done and was his usual fired up self on the mound. He was visibly upset when John Farrell came out to get him after throwing 92 pitches in the sixth. He was in line for the win until Tazawa allowed the run in the eighth … Many will question Farrell bringing in Villarreal with the bases loaded and the game on the line for his first appearance with the team. Although he has only appeared in seven games this season (all in April with Detroit), he has had major control issues by walking eight batters in 4 1/3 innings and posting a 20.77 ERA.
