Tuesday night at Citi Field was Marlon Byrd T-shirt Giveaway Night. Little did fans know, they were giving Byrd away too.

The Mets chose not to make a move to unload veteran Byrd at the July 31 nonwaiver trade deadline. But as it turns out, he still only had a few weeks left in New York.

Byrd cleared waivers Tuesday and was traded to the Pirates, the team announced. Catcher John Buck was also included in the deal.

In return, the Mets got infield prospect Dilson Herrera and a player to be named later.

Byrd is in the midst of an amazing comeback season. He was suspended 50 games last season for failing a test for performance-enhancing drugs. He went to Mexico to play during the winter league and resurrected his career enough to the point the Mets signed him as a flier before the season. He signed for just one year and $700,000.

But Byrd has been the most productive hitter on the team this season. He is batting .285 with a .330 on-base percentage. He leads the team with 21 home runs and 71 RBIs.

In return, the Mets get a top prospect in Herrera. He is just 19 years old and playing in Single-A, but is batting .265 with 11 home runs in 109 games. Herrera isn’t a stranger to Citi Field though. He played in last month’s All-Star Futures Game where he went 0-for-1 in his only plate appearance. He likely profiles as a second baseman in the majors, a spot the Mets are in need of despite Daniel Murphy’s adaptation to the position.

Buck became expendable when the team called up top prospect Travis d’Arnaud last week. D’Arnaud, MLB.com’s No. 6 prospect in baseball, is 3-for-21 with a home run in his first eight games.
