Mets’ Matt Harvey opts for rehab over surgery for now

You can debate whether it’s good news or not, but for now Matt Harvey will be avoiding Tommy John surgery.

The team announced Tuesday the Mets ace will continue to rehab the partially torn UCL in his right elbow for six to eight weeks. If suitable progress is made, he may avoid surgery altogether. But the team hasn’t ruled out the option, which would cost Harvey the entire 2014 season.

“[Monday], Matt was seen for a second opinion by Dr. James Andrews in Gulf Breeze, Florida,” the Mets said in a statement. “On review of the MRI, Dr. Andrews confirmed the diagnosis and after clinical examination recommended a throwing program to test the elbow before any final decision on surgery.

“Accordingly, Matt will embark on a structured throwing program of up to 6-8 weeks that will extend into the offseason. During or following this throwing regimen, a final decision will be made on the near term need for surgery.”

Harvey was on his way to a Top-3 finish in the Cy Young voting this season. He started the All-Star Game at Citi Field and had a 9-5 record with a 2.27 ERA and, at the time of his injury, a major league-leading 191 strikeouts.

“For me, it felt like, why jump into surgery where I never had the tingling, the numbness, the shooting pain in my elbow that are usually the symptoms of needing that surgery?” Harvey said Tuesday. “For me, if a rehab process and a strengthening process is the way to go, in my mind that’s what I wanted to do.”

Harvey, 24, previously tweeted he would try to be ready to go for the start of the 2014 season.
