Phillies: Bob McClure had rough go of it with Red Sox

Bob McClure, the Phillies’ new pitching coach, had a tough go of it the last time he held an MLB coaching position.

McClure was unceremoniously fired by the Red Sox in August of Boston’s brutal 2012 season. Sox GM Ben Cherington claimed the firing was strictly performance-based but it was also reported throughout the season that he clashed with then-Boston manager Bobby Valentine.

McClure had been hired by the organization before Valentine came aboard. Things climaxed in an Aug. 1, 2012 radio interview on WEEI when Valentine was asked about visits to the mound.

“When Bob McClure was on his two-week vacation … I’m sorry, not vacation. His two weeks away from the team,” Valentine said, making reference to the time McClure had to leave the organization due to a medical emergency with one of his children.

Valentine was fired by the Red Sox less than two months later after McClure was let go.

The 61-year-old McClure, who was out of baseball last season, was a pitching coach with the Royals and Rockies prior to taking a job in Boston.

His new dugout partner, Ryne Sandberg says he’s quite happy that McClure is now in Philadelphia.

“Bob brings a wealth of experience to our staff,” Sandberg said. “We talked to many good candidates and couldn’t be more pleased to add ‘Mac’ as our pitching coach.”
