Report: Yankees sign Carlos Beltran to three-year deal

The Yankees got some measure of help late Friday in the wake of the defections of Curtis Granderson and Robinson Cano.

The New York Daily News reports the team has agreed to a three-year, $45 million deal with All Star outfielder Carlos Beltran. This will be Beltran’s second stay in New York after spending seven years with the Mets. Beltran had been interested in signing with the Yankees in 2005, but a deal was tabled before he eventually chose the Mets.

The Yankees made the move just hours after losing Cano to the Mariners on a 10-year, $240 million deal and Granderson to the Mets on a four-year, $60 million deal.

Beltran’s wife, Jessica, confirmed the deal with a post on Instagram, saying “Back to NY #yankees #goingafterthatring.”

Beltran, 36, has not slowed down since leaving the Mets in a 2011 trade which netted them Zack Wheeler from the Giants.

He signed with the Cardinals and carried them to a World Series last season, hitting .296 with 24 homers and 84 RBIs in the regular season. He hit .294 with a .400 on-base percentage in the World Series though his team came up short against Boston.

Beltran is an eight-time All Star, including five times with the Mets and each of the last two seasons in St. Louis. He also won three Gold Gloves in New York, though his days as an elite defender are behind him.

The Yankees already had an abundance of outfielders, even with Granderson leaving.

They inked center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury, Beltran’s opponent in the World Series, to a seven-year deal on Wednesday. They also have Alfonso Soriano, Ichiro Suzuki, Vernon Wells and Brett Gardner under contract. It does likely mean the pursuit by the Yankees of free agent Shin-Soo Choo is over, however.
