Former Phillies ace Roy Oswalt retires

Another ace from the Phillies’ historic 2011 pitching staff called it a career Tuesday, as Roy Oswalt announced he was hanging up his cleats for good after a productive 13 year career. Roy Halladay retired in late 2013.

Oswalt came to Philadelphia as a trade deadline acquisition in 2010, going 7-1 with a 1.74 ERA to help lead the Phillies to an NL East title.

He returned for a full season in 2011 as part of the famed “four aces,” along with Roy Halladay, Cliff Lee and Cole Hamels. That season, the righty went 9-10 with a 3.69 ERA on yet another NL East championship team.

After battling injuries, Oswalt signed with Texas as a free agent in 2012, and pitched nine times for the Rockies last season as well.

Oswalt has a career record of 163-102, most of those wins amassed during nine and a half seasons pitching for the Astros. He finished in the top five of the Cy Young ballot five times, including a third-place finish in 2004 when he went 20-10.

In 2005, Oswalt led the Astros to the World Series and earned the NLCS MVP award after a second straight 20-win campaign.

Oswalt plans to join former agent Bob Garber at RMG as vice president of baseball operations.
