Johan Santana will get a chance to make a comeback from shoulder surgery, but it won’t be with the Mets.

The former two-time Cy Young winner signed a one-year minor league deal with the Orioles on Tuesday, according to CBS Sports’ Jon Heyman. The contract will be worth $3 million if he makes the major league team out of spring.

Santana signed a six-year, $137.5 million deal with the Mets in 2008. He had limited success, though he never reached the height of his career in Minnesota when he won the Cy Young in 2004 and 2006.

He will always have the night of June 2, 2012, however, when he threw the first no-hitter in Mets history.

Santana had a record of 46-34 with a 3.18 ERA and 607 strikeouts in 717 innings in 109 starts for the Mets. He currently stands at 139-78 in his 12-year career.

The 34-year-old lefty had shoulder surgery in 2011 and missed the entire season. He experienced health struggles again in 2012, notably after throwing 134 pitches in his no-hitter. He first sprained his ankle in a freak injury covering first base and then suffered back issues which ended Santana’s 2012 season.

Santana re-tore his surgically repaired left shoulder capsule prior to the 2013 season and had to undergo a second surgery. He missed the entire 2013 season.

The Mets had a team option for 2014, but bought it out for $5.5 million instead of paying the $25 million option.

The Orioles’ projected rotation for 2014 includes Ubaldo Jimenez, Miguel Gonzalez, Chris Tillman, Bud Norris and Wei-Yin Chen. The back end of that rotation leaves plenty of opportunity for Santana to make the roster, though it was reported his velocity was significantly diminished in workouts this spring.
