Yankees put Mark Teixeira on DL with hamstring strain

Mark Teixeira’s healthy return to the Yankees’ lineup last all of three games.

The first baseman was placed on the 15-day disabled list Saturday due to a strained right hamstring suffered in the fourth game of the season against Toronto on Friday. He talked on Friday about hopefully being able to play over the weekend, but was not very optimistic.

“It wasn’t one of those excruciating, fall-down-because-of-the-pain [injuries],” Teixeira said after the game. “But it was significant enough to where I knew something was wrong.”

The injury looked innocuous. He moved to go for a foul ball hit by Melky Cabrera and pulled up lame after bending down to pick it up. Manager Joe Girardi and trainer Steve Donohue came out of the dugout and he was removed from the game.

He will undergo an MRI in New York on Monday, though it was initially diagnosed as a Grade 1 strain, the least-severe diagnosis.

Teixeira missed almost all of the 2013 season with a wrist injury which required surgery. He played in just 15 games in 2013 and batted only .086 with 11 strikeouts in 36 spring training at-bats last month.

He also injured the right hamstring in the 2010 playoffs.

The Yankees are incredibly thin at first base. Kelly Johnson, the starter at third, moved over to first base Friday night and will likely fill the role regularly in Teixeira’s absence. Yangervis Solarte will play third base.

The team called up catcher Austin Romine in the corresponding move. Romine has never played first base in the majors or minors, but having Romine on the roster will allow Francisco Cervelli to play some first base. Cervelli has never played first base in the majors, but has played at both second and third.
