MLB video highlights: Red Sox top Yankees, 4-1

Following David Ortiz’s clutch three-run home run in Wednesday’s win it seemed that would kick start the Red Sox offense and get it going, but that turned out not to be the case as Yankees starter Michael Pineta shut down the Red Sox offense as the Sox fell to the Yankees, 4-1 in the Bronx Thursday night.

The Red Sox couldn’t get anything going against Pineta as the right-hander had a terrific slider, which made hitters look foolish on many occasions. Pineta held the Red Sox to four hits and one run in six-plus innings of work, while striking out seven. Pineta finally allowed a run in the seventh inning on a Daniel Nava home run as he couldn’t record an out in the inning and was lifted for Cesar Cabral. Cabral and David Phelps (2 1/3 innings) held the Sox off the scoreboard for the remainder of the game.

Coming into the game the big story was how Clay Buchholz would look following being roughed up in his season debut last Saturday. Buchholz looked better, but still wasn’t as sharp as what Sox fans are used to seeing, as he went six innings allowing four runs (two earned) while striking out six. He allowed two unearned runs in the fourth, before Dean Anna took him deep in the fifth for a solo homer. Jacoby Ellsbury had an RBI single later in the inning for the fourth Yankees run.

Left-handers Craig Breslow and Chris Capuano each pitched 1-2-3 innings in relief of Buchholz.

The Red Sox were limited to four hits for a second day in a row, this after recording 14 hits in each of the previous two games. Xander Bogaerts finished with two hits to pace the offense, while Nava’s home run was a much needed one as he entered the game with a .125 average.

The teams will continue their weekend series tomorrow night (7:10, NESN, MLB Network) where Jon Lester will go up against CC Sabathia.

What they’ll be saying: Even though Buchholz suffered the loss and allowed four runs, he didn’t pitch all that bad and looked better than he did last Saturday, which included a higher velocity on his fastball. He was hurt in the fourth inning by an error from third baseman Jonathan Herrera leading to the two unearned runs … There is no denying the Red Sox offense is in a funk, combing for eight hits in the last two games. Some of it has to do with the inconsistent batting order and not being able to build any continuity because of all the players rotating in and out because of injuries … Friday night’s game will be a treat with two of the best left-hander’s in the game going head-to-head in Lester and Sabathia.
