Yankees fans will now become familiar with a process Mets fans are all too sadly used to.

Yankees starter Ivan Nova was diagnosed with a partially torn UCL in his throwing elbow Sunday. He was immediately placed on the 15-day DL.

The team will send Nova back to New York for an examination by team doctors before deciding whether Tommy John surgery will be necessary.

Mets pitchers Matt Harvey, Bobby Parnell and Jeremy Hefner went through the same process within the past year. All settled on going under the knife.

“It’s really unfortunate,” manager Joe Girardi said, acknowledging surgery was the norm. “It’s a guy that obviously we were counting on pretty heavily this year.”

Vidal Nuno made the emergency start on Sunday due to last week’s rain postponement throwing off the regular rotation. Masahiro Tanaka, whose start was pushed ahead due to the rain, will start on Tuesday in Boston.

Nuno will likely slide into the spot abdicated by Nova, at least for the time being. Nuno pitched five scoreless innings on Sunday in his first major league start. He struck out six and allowed just five baserunners. He threw just 69 pitches.

David Phelps could be another option for the No. 5 starter spot, though he has slid into an important spot in the back of the bullpen with David Robertson out and would need to stretch out his arm.
