MLB video highlights: Yankees rout Red Sox, 14-5

Winning starts with pitching and defense and pitching and defense is not going well for the Red Sox of late.

After taking a step forward after a terrific start by John Lackey and well-played game Wednesday night, the team took two steps back Thursday as the team committed five errors and Felix Doubront lasted just 2 2/3 innings in the Red Sox’ 14-5 loss to the Yankees.

It was a messy outing for Doubront as he couldn’t get out of the third inning for the second time in five starts this season. The left-hander allowed seven runs (three earned) on six hits while walking two and striking out one. He threw 73 pitches, only 40 for strikes. He wasn’t helped out much in the field as Xander Bogaerts, Jackie Bradley Jr., Dustin Pedroia as well as himself all committed errors. The Red Sox did not score first for the 15th time in 23 games this season, they are now 3-12 in those games.

“I think the sooner we move past this one the better,” manager John Farrell said. “We need to execute at a higher level without question. Defensively, sloppy night. You’d think that’s the one area you have some control over and yet we didn’t put forth a very good defensive effort here tonight. Once again we spotted the opponent a number of runs to get behind early. Felix was erratic with his command and we contributed with some plays defensively to extend a couple of those innings. Like I said, the sooner we can move past this one the better.”

The Yankees were led by Yangervis Solarte who had two hits and four RBI. Jacoby Ellsbury had three hits (2 RBI), while Derek Jeter (2 RBI) and Alfonso Soriano (RBI) each added two hits in the rout. CC Sabathia went six innings allowing two runs while scattering three hits and striking out eight.

Burke Badenhop once again was given mop up duty as he went 2 2/3 innings allowing no runs on just one hit. Craig Breslow was almost as bad as Doubront as he allowed five runs (four earned) on five hits in an inning of work. Edward Mujica allowed a run in his 1 2/3 innings and then position player Mike Carp allowed a run in the ninth.

The Red Sox scored twice in the third inning, the first on a Shane Victorino RBI double and the second on a David Ortiz sacrifice fly. They added three more in the seventh as Jackie Bradley Jr. scored on a passed ball on, Jonny Gomes hit a sacrifice fly and Xander Bogaerts laced an RBI double — they were all unearned as Derek Jeter committed an error in the frame.

Boston will travel to Toronto for a weekend series starting tomorrow night (7:07, NESN) as Jake Peavy will go up against Mark Buehrle.

What they’ll be saying: Not much can be said about this one, except the team needs to play better in all facets of the game. The five errors were the most errors the Red Sox committed in a game since April 28, 2001 where they also made five. They also allowed five unearned runs for the second time in three games … The team will get back Will Middlebrooks Friday, as they optioned Brock Holt back to Pawtucket after the game and now will finally get their team at full strength for the first time all season as Shane Victorino (1-for-5) made his season debut tonight. Having not had it’s full complement of players to this point in the season it’s been hard to gauge the team, but now time will tell just how good the 2014 team is.
