MLB video highlights: Tigers top struggling Red Sox, 6-1

The offensive struggle is real. The frustration is starting to set in.

After being shutout Friday night against Max Scherzer and the Tigers, the Red Sox didn’t do much better Saturday night as they only manged one run in their 6-1 loss against Rick Porcello and the same Tigers. The Red Sox now have scored just one run in their last 19 innings and have lost three in a row.

Porcello held the Red Sox in check allowing just one run over eight innings, scattering six hits and striking out four. He finished the game retiring 11 straight and 12 of his last 13. The Sox got their lone run on a Xander Bogaerts solo homer in the fifth inning for his first career home run at Fenway. Mike Napoli (three hits) and Bogaerts each had multi-hit games in the loss.

“He threw a lot of strikes and for the second night in a row induce a double play when needed,” said manager John Farrell of Porcello. “He attacked the strike zone. He didn’t issue any walks to help build an inning other than (Mike) Carp in the fourth inning. They’ve done a good job and their infield defense obviously has got improved range from a year ago. They are a good team.”

Red Sox starter John Lackey had his worst outing in quite some time as the right-hander allowed the most runs in a game since April 18. Detroit got a run each in the second and third innings and then two in the fifth and two more in the sixth, although one run in the sixth was unearned as Edward Mujica entered and uncorked a throw into center field on a pick-off attempt at second base. Overall Lackey went 5 1/3 innings allowing six runs (five earned) on nine hits, while walking two and striking out seven.

Mujica went just 2/3 inning with a throwing error and allowing a sacrifice fly for an inherited runner to score. Chris Capuano threw two scoreless innings followed by Koji Uehara, who hadn’t pitched since last Sunday, throwing a scoreless ninth.

The teams will close out their weekend series Sunday night (8:05, ESPN) where Jake Peavy will go up against Anibal Sanchez.

What they’ll be saying: With the loss the Red Sox have now lost two straight series’ losses four out of eight at home. Also with the loss, it marks the first time the Red Sox have scored one run or fewer in back-to-back games for the first time since July 26, 2013 … Lackey didn’t have his best stuff and the powerful Tigers lineup made him pay as he matched his shortest outing of the season (5 1/3 innings) and number of runs allowed (6). Miguel Cabrera’s home run was the first Lackey has allowed at Fenway Park since Sept. 19, 2013, including the postseason. He did set a new career high with his 33rd straight start of going at least five innings … The Red Sox will look to avoid their first four-game losing streak since the end of the 2012 season tomorrow night.
