MLB video highlights: Tigers earn sweep of Red Sox with 6-2 win

Well, it finally happened.

After going the entire 2013 season without losing more than three straight games, the Red Sox fell to the Tigers 6-2 Sunday night for their fourth consecutive loss for the first time since the end of 2012, as the Tigers completed a weekend sweep. The Red Sox hadn’t been swept by the Tigers at home since 1983.

The Tigers made Red Sox starter Jake Peavy pay for his mislocated pitches as the righty didn’t allow a walk after entering the game issuing at least two in all eight of his prior starts this season, but he did allow a season-high 11 hits leading to five Tigers runs, including a three-run third. In all, Peavy went six innings allowing five runs on 11 hits and striking out two. He did not have a 1-2-3 inning.

“With the top of their order, any mistake we made we paid for it,” manager John Farrell said. “The 1-2 change up to Victor (Martinez) stays up in the zone for a two-run homer. An 0-2 fastball to (Alex) Avilia for another run in that sixth inning. They came in swinging the bat well and when Jake missed his location that lineup made us pay for it.”

Junichi Tazawa allowed a solo homer in his one inning of relief, followed by Andrew Miller throwing a scoreless eighth and Burke Badenhop and Craig Breslow combining for a scoreless ninth.

Xander Bogaerts knocked home Grady Sizemore for the games’ first run in the third and the Sox added another in the fifth on a Mike Napoli fielder’s choice, but that would be all the Red Sox would get. Tigers starter Anibal Sanchez held them to two runs over five innings while scattering five hits. Bogaerts had his second multi-hit game in as many nights for the first time in his career.

The Red Sox will be off Monday before hosting the Blue Jays for three games beginning Tuesday night (7:10, NESN).

What they’ll be saying: The Tigers dominated the weekend series over the Red Sox, with it being the second series sweep by an opponent at Fenway Park after no team did it last season … Although Peavy had better control than in past games this season, the Tigers certainly made him pay with pitches over the plate. The first three hitters in the Tigers lineup went a combined 9-for-14 with three extra-base hits … The series with the Blue Jays this week now becomes even more interesting with the Jays two games ahead of the Red Sox in the standings and the Sox trending south.
