MLB video highlights: Rays top Red Sox in extra innings, 6-5

Things keep getting worse for the Red Sox as they squandered a 5-0 lead to eventually fall to the Rays, 6-5 in 15 innings Saturday afternoon in Tampa leading to their ninth straight loss.

With the game tied at five in the 15th inning against Andrew Miller, James Loney singled to start the inning. With Cole Figureroa pinch-running, he advanced to second base on a bunt single, then was able to scored on a Desmond Jennings grounder back to the mound as Miller looked to turn a double play, but the throw went into center field allowing Figureroa to score and the Rays to walk-off for the second straight night as well as give Miller his fourth loss of the season.

The loss was even more frustrating for the Red Sox as they jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead against Rays starter David Price in the top of the first, highlighted by a three-run run homer by A.J. Pierzynski, but those would be the only runs they’d get over the 15 innings. As a team they finished with six hits, just two coming after the first inning.

Red Sox starter Jake Peavy couldn’t hold the lead as he allowed five runs over six innings on eight hits. The bullpen once again pitched well as Craig Breslow, Junichi Tazawa, Koji Uehara, Edward Mujica, Chris Capuano, Burke Badenhop and Miller pitched 8 scoreless innings of relief before Miller allowed the game-winning run in the 15th,

The teams will wrap up their weekend series Sunday afternoon (1:10, NESN) with Brandon Workman taking on Jake Odorizzi.

What they’ll be saying: There isn’t much to say following this one as the Red Sox just can’t have anything go their way as they continue to try and do anything to get a win. From an health perspective things aren’t going well either, as Shane Victorino was placed in the 15-day DL prior to the game with a right hamstring injury and Daniel Nava was recalled to take his place. Mike Napoli and David Ortiz were held out of the lineup at the start of the game as Napoli is dealing with a number of ailments, including a lingering finger injury and a planned down day for Ortiz because of a bad calf. Xander Bogaerts was removed from the game in the 11th inning with tightness in his hamstring. The Red Sox will now turn to Workman making his first major league start of the year Sunday as they look to avoid a double digit losing streak.
