MLB video highlights: Rays complete sweep of Red Sox with 8-5 win

There’s no doubt frustration was setting in for the Red Sox before Sunday’s game, but for the first time of late they visibly showed their frustrations in their tenth straight loss, an 8-5 defeat to the Rays, initiating a benches clearing scuffle in the process.

After the Red Sox tied the game at three in the seventh inning on a pinch-hit home run from Jonny Gomes, Craig Breslow gave up the lead on one swing of the bat as he allowed a three-run home run to Sean Rodriguez. Yunel Esobar added a two-run double later in the inning to extend their lead to 8-3, then things got interesting.

Escobar stole third base to the Red Sox’ disliking with the Rays ahead by five runs and the benches emptied with Gomes coming in from left field and shoving Escobar. Both were ejected from the game along with Rodriguez.

The Sox scored two in the ninth, but it was too little too late. They did get a solid start from Brandon Workman as the right-hander went five innings allowing three runs on five hits to take a no decision.

Boston will be back in action tomorrow afternoon (1:10, NESN) in Atlanta to take on the Braves as Clay Buchholz gets the start for the Sox and will be going up against Ervin Santana.

What they’ll be saying: The 10-game losing streak is the longest losing streak for the team since 2004. They had not been getting much offense of any kind during the streak until Sunday as they even got a hit in a big situation with Gomes’ home run … Before the game Mike Napoli was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a finger injury that has been bothering him for quite some time, so expect Mike Carp to get extensive work at first base until he can return … With as many players on the DL that the Sox have, it certainly makes snapping their losing skid that much more difficult, but the team needs to find some way to pull things together or else it could be a very long summer in Boston.
