Cubs – Red Sox series preview: Pitching matchups at Fenway

For the second time in four seasons, the Chicago Cubs will play a series at Fenway Park, beginning Monday (7 p.m., NESN) when Chicago pits Jake Arrieta (4-1, 2.05 ERA) against Jake Peavy (1-6, 4.93 ERA).

In 2014, both the Cubs and the Red Sox have taken on the “lovable loser” tag that had been slapped on them for the majority of the 20th century. The Sox, of course, have since broken out of the spell with three World Championships in the past 10 years, but the Cubs continue to dwell in the basement of the NL Central with not much hope in sight. Former Sox GM Theo Epstein has been at the helm in Chicago since October 2011 and has done little to show franchise improvement. Epstein is believed to be firmly on the hot seat.

In Game 2 of the three-game set at Fenway, Epstein’s Cubs will send Edwin Jackson to the mound (5-8, 5.22 ERA) against Boston’s Clay Buchholz (3-4, 6.75 ERA). Buchholz was solid in his first game back from a lengthy DL-stint last week against the Mariners as he went 7.1 innings, allowing four earned runs on seven hits. Of note, however, Buchholz did allow three home runs in the game in which the Sox righty picked up the win.

In the series finale Wednesday, Chicago will send Travis Wood (7-6, 4.52 ERA) up against Brandon Workman (1-1, 3.27 ERA).

All games in the series start at 7 p.m. and will be broadcast locally by NESN.
