5 top Derek Jeter moments at the All-Star Game

Derek Jeter will start his final All-Star Game right at the top of the lineup.

AL manager John Farrell released his lineup Monday and penciled in the starting shortstop atop the order for the first time in his All-Star career.

“[It’s a way] to celebrate a player who’s not only a champion but a guy that sets the bar that I think all players should aspire to,” Farrel said. “The way he’s handled himself with class, with performance, no doubt [he’s] a Hall of Famer.”

Adam Wainwright, who will be facing Jeter in his opening at-bat, called it “an honor” to face the Yankee captain.

Metro looks at Jeter’s top All-Star moments leading up to Tuesday’s game (8 p.m., FOX).

1. July 11, 2000

Derek Jeter has never won a regular-season Most Valuable Player award, but he has taken one in the All-Star Game.

Jeter started for the first time in the Midsummer Classic — one spot ahead of teammate Bernie Williams making his final All-Star start — and shined at the plate. He finished 3-for-3 with a double and two RBIs. He saw a grand total of five pitches, but he made his short time at the plate count.

Jeter was the easy choice for MVP as James Baldwin picked up the win and Al Leiter took the loss, 6-3, at Turner Field in Atlanta.

2. July 15, 2008

Jeter only got a chance to play in one All-Star Game in his home city as he missed the 2013 game at Citi Field. But he was the top attraction at a game which never seemed to want to end in 2008 at Yankee Stadium.

Jeter started and went 1-for-3 with a steal before Michael Young took over at shortstop. It was Young’ sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 15th that gave the AL the win. And Jeter was still there to congratulate him.

3. July 10, 2001

Jeter isn’t going to be confused for longtime All-Star opponent Barry Bonds, but he did hit one career All-Star home run.

The game will be remembered by most as the final All-Star Game for another great shortstop, Cal Ripken, who was goaded into playing short by Alex Rodriguez. Ripken also hit a home run in the game courtesy of Chan Ho Park.

Jeter, meanwhile, hit a solo home run off future Yankee teammate Jon Lieber in his only at-bat of a 4-1 AL win managed by Joe Torre.

4. July 7, 1998

Jeter’s first appearance in an All-Star Game wasn’t one to remember at the plate — he went 0-for-1 with a strikeout.

But it was the first of many wins for the American League with Jeter on the roster. The team is 9-2-1 all-time when the Yankee is in the dugout.

5. July 13, 1999

OK, so no one’s ever accused Jeter of having too much of a personality. But when he isn’t carefully crafting his off- and on-field personas, he can be pretty funny.

He got a chance to show that lighter side when he invaded enemy territory during the 1999 All-Star Game at Fenway Park. Beloved Beantowner Nomar Garciaparra got the start at short, but Jeter stole the show with a dead-on impression of Garciaparra’s OCD batting routine during his first at-bat of the night.
