Bartolo Colon’s stay in New York could be a short one.

According to an ESPN report, the team is exploring a deal for Colon before the July 31 trade deadline.

Colon is 41 years old, but still relatively cheap considering his performance this season. He’s 8-8 with a 3.99 ERA, down from a high of 5.84 in mid-May. He has a 2.80 ERA over his last nine starts. The workhorse has thrown over 100 pitches in 10 of 18 starts.

He signed a two-year, $20 million deal before the year, and is making just $9 million this season and $11 million next season.

The Mets have plenty of depth at starting pitcher with Jon Niese likely to rejoin the rotation after the All-Star break and Dillon Gee, Zack Wheeler and Jacob deGrom all pitching well. Even Daisuke Matsuzaka has been a capable fill-in while others have been injured.

The team also still has top prospect Noah Syndergaard waiting in Triple-A. Syndergaard pitched in Sunday’s Futures Game in Minnesota for the top prospects in baseball. But he has struggled a bit in 2014 with a 5.31 ERA in 16 starts and spent a brief period on the disabled list.
