Ben Revere in second place for NL batting crown

Remember when Ben Revere was mercilessly criticized for his bad throwing arm and constant mistakes on the base paths?

Remember when the speedy centerfielder was benched, and moved down to seventh or eighth in the lineup?

Well don’t look now, but Revere is currently second in the National League batting title, and has netted an incredible 72 base hits since June 26.

“Hopefully I can finish strong,” Revere said before Monday’s game.

With his average up at .315 after two singles in Monday’s 4-1 win against the Mariners, Revere is in second place behind Justin Morneau (3.23) and just in front of Yasiel Puig (.313) and Andrew McCutchen (.311).

“If he can maintain this and continue it, he can certainly [win the batting title],” Ryne Sandberg said.

The Phillies surprisingly have two other players in the top ten in big stat races this season.

Ryan Howard, whose batting just .221, has a chance, though maybe not as good as Revere for the batting title, to lead the league in RBI.

After Monday, Howard has 77, behind only Giancarlo Stanton (88) and Adrian Gonzalez (83).

Teammate Marlon Byrd knocked in his 71st run of the season with a third inning double against Seattle.

On the Hill, Cole Hamels has been putting on a show as well, climbing into the top five in NL ERA at a 2.44 clip.

He trails Henderson Alverez by a hundredth of a run and Adam Wainwright by four tenths.

Hamels is a way off from taking the league ERA title however, with Clayton Kershaw miles ahead at 1.86, and Johnny Cueto scorching hot as well at 2.06.
