Deadline day: The latest Celtics trade rumors

Danny Ainge’s cell phone may or may not burn a hole through his right ear between now and 3 p.m. today.

The Celtics are in the thick of NBA trade discussions and own one of the more unique dilemmas prior to this afternoon’s deadline: start the rebuilding process by starting to accumulate assets to put around the injured Rajon Rondo or tinker with the current roster in an attempt to make one more run with Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett.

The majority of Celtics fans on sports talk radio and Twitter today seem to finally be siding with the former, mostly as a result of the C’s embarrassing loss to the Lakers in LA Wednesday night.

Here are the latest notes from the Twitter-verse:

- Yahoo! Sports’ Adrian Wojnarowski tweeted that “Charlotte’s struggling to find a team willing to take Gerald Henderson for a first-round draft pick. He could stay.” The Celtics had been rumored to be interested in bringing Henderson to Boston to solidify its guard rotation for this year.

- Wojnarowski also tweeted, “Milwaukee, Phoenix emerging as frontrunners for Josh Smith deal, league sources tell Y! Sports. Boston still a “darkhorse,” one source says.”

- CBS Sports’ Ken Berger, who last Friday reported that the Celtics and Lakers engaged in talks to swap Rajon Rondo and Dwight Howard, talked of a minor deal today involving the Celtics possibly landing guard Jordan Crawford (13.2 ppg). “Wizards are “waiting this one out” on a possible deal for Jordan Crawford. Talks with Celtics and Mavs but no deal yet.

- ESPN’s Chris Broussard tweeted at 12:30 p.m. EDT, “One exec involved in talks w/ATL for Josh Smith now saying “50/50 chance he gets traded.” That’s a downgrade from yesterday.
