Eagles Notebook: Cullen Jenkins released

The Eagles cleaned a little house Monday by cutting defensive tackle Cullen Jenkins.

Jenkins, who signed with the Eagles as a free agent in 2011, was brought to Philadelphia to provide a legitimate inside pass-rush. He registered 9.5 sacks in his two seasons here, including four in 2012. Jenkins might be most famous for his sideline feud with Andy Reid.

“I had a chance to speak with Cullen today and let him know of our decision,” said GM Howie Roseman. “It’s one of the most difficult parts of the job. He has been a very productive player in this league for a long time but we felt it in our team’s best interests that we go in a different direction. By releasing him at this point, it gives he and his agent more time to sign on with another team. We wish Cullen and his family all the best as he continues his NFL career.”

Jenkins, who was due $5.5 million in 2013, restructured his contract at this time last year. He reportedly received an annual salary of just $820,000 in 2012, but was given $1.5 million in guaranteed money. Jenkins originally agreed on a five-year deal worth at least $7 million.
