Santonio Holmes unsure how much he’ll contribute in Week 2

More vagueness emanated from enigmatic Jets wide receiver Santonio Holmes about his availability and how many reps he can play on Thursday night against the Patriots. But it may not be all gamesmanship from Holmes. He may just not know how much he can contribute at this point.

It is obvious that while Holmes may be fully recovered from last year’s Lisfranc injury suffered 11 months ago in Week 4, an injury that required surgery and cost him the rest of the season, he isn’t the same player quite yet. Now back and healed, Holmes still isn’t fully ready to make an impact but he was on the field for 45 snaps on Sunday in the win over the Buccaneers.

He did register one catch for 13 yards late in the second quarter — his only reception of the game — but he didn’t have his usual spark or pep.

“I survived. That’s probably the biggest thing I can say right now, is that I survived and got through it OK,” Holmes said Wednesday. “No injuries, so pretty good.”

Holmes remains uncertain if he can make the same impact — or perhaps do even more — against New England. The short turnaround time, only three full days between games, plus some limited travel won’t help the outlook.

Wide receiver Jeremy Kerley is likely out due to a concussion suffered this past weekend, so the impetus is on Holmes to get on the field and make an impact.

“Do I expect [more snaps]? I expect Kerley to be healthy which is not going to happen right now. I really don’t know,” Holmes said. “Depends on how the game plan goes. Up until this point, [offensive coordinator] Marty [Mornhinweg] loves to throw the ball. All of our receivers are on deck this week and we all have to be ready to sub in and out for guys when needed.”
