Rex Ryan passes on watching Cincinnati game film with Jets

Jets head coach Rex Ryan knows what he’ll see if he watches the game tape from Sunday’s humiliating, 49-9 defeat in Cincinnati with his team. So, he skipped the usual film session and jumped right into preparing for next week.

“Anybody that was on the sideline or played in that game knows what happened,” Ryan said Monday. “We got our butts kicked and there’s no two ways about it.”

Ryan said the only other time is his tenure he chose not to watch the tape on Monday with his team was after the infamous 45-3 loss to the Patriots in December 2010 when he buried a football to symbolically move on.

“Yeah, there was one other time that I think is pretty obvious,” Ryan said. “I never buried the football this time, but that was an obvious one.”

Geno Smith, who threw two interceptions returned for touchdowns in the loss, said he watched the game tape with quarterbacks coach David Lee on Monday. He admitted he has plenty to clean up from a performance which ended with him sitting on the bench as Matt Simms played most of the fourth quarter.

“Coach Lee and I watched it and just wanted to talk over some things that we saw in the game and basically just kind of put it behind us,” Smith said. “Some [tape review] and then move on from it.”

The Jets have a lot to clean up before they face the Saints (6-1), who have the third-best passing offensive in the NFL. Ryan misspoke in his press conference, saying the team was 7-1, before drawing laughs by saying he hoped that wasn’t “foreshadowing.”

“Whatever they are, that’s a pretty good football team, so obviously we have our work cut out for us,” Ryan said. “We have to improve in a hurry in a lot of areas, and the challenge, if we don’t play better pass defense than we did this past week, [Drew Brees] will throw for 700 yards. Clearly, we have to improve in that area.”
