Top 3 free agent targets for the New York Jets

The Jets have spent the last two days cutting off dead weight — namely Antonio Cromartie and Santonio Holmes with Mark Sanchez likely to follow — ahead of the start of Tuesday’s NFL free agency period. Now comes the time to use that money.

General manager John Idzik was just settling into his new role last season when free agency began and had a roster full of bloated contracts not of his doing. He prepared for the 2014 offseason and after a suprisingly promising 2013 season, he has expectations placed on him for the first time.

We look at the top free agents the Jets should be targeting Tuesday.

1. Alterraun Verner

Antonio Cromartie has been kicked to the curb and suddenly Dee Milliner and Kyle Wilson are the top cornerbacks on the Jets’ roster.

Even with Cromartie — there’s a chance he gets a new deal for less money — the position is more important than any other on defense.

Alterraun Verner is the top corner on the market. Verner, 25, had five picks last season for Tennessee.

2. Eric Decker

The sexiest name on the free agent market may be Denver wide receiver Eric Decker. And yes, we’re talking about Decker, not his wife.

The 26-year-old had more catches and yards than the top two Jets combined in 2013. But it sounds like it’s going to take a lot of money to lure him away from Peyton Manning.

3. Josh McCown

Jets fans clamored for legitimate competition for Mark Sanchez. Now they are doing the same with Geno Smith.

Mike Vick, Matt Schaub and Josh McCown seem to be the top options. Vick, despite his relationship with Marty Mornhinweg, is a divisive player the Jets don’t need. McCown fits well.
