The Jets have added another wide receiver to boost the number of potential targets for whoever wins the quarterback battle with Tuesday’s signing of Jacoby Ford.

The signing was announced by the team via their Twitter account.

Ford spent the previous four years of his NFL career with the Raiders where he played a full 16 games just once. His best season was his rookie year in 2010 when he had 25 receptions for 470 yards and two touchdowns. But injuries and poor quarterback play in Oakland limited the opportunities to showcase his speed.

He was a former track and field standout at Clemson where he was an NCAA All-American. Ford can be a playmaker at wide receiver for the Jets but also has the potential, if healthy, to be a tremendous kickoff returner.

Ford has 101-yard kickoff returns for touchdowns twice in his career.

A team source tells Metro the team will likely not be bringing back wide receiver Josh Cribbs. The oft-injured Cribbs was signed in the middle of last season to bolster the wide receiver corps but he suffered a season-ending shoulder injury several weeks later.

The team’s biggest signing this offseason was wide receiver Eric Decker. The former Broncos wideout signed a five-year, $36.2 million deal on March 12.

The Jets also signed cornerback Dimitri Patterson on Tuesday. The corner has played for five teams since being signed as an undrafted free agent in 2005 by the Redskins. He spent time with the Chiefs, Eagles, Browns and, most recently, the Dolphins for the past two seasons. He played in just six games last season as he battled a groin injury which eventually ended his year, but he had four interceptions.

The deal is for one year and $3 million, according to ProFootballTalk.
