Chip Kelly pleased with Eagles’ rookies thus far in OTAs

Chip Kelly doesn’t waste time, and he was pleased, addressing the media earlier this week, with how quickly the Eagles’ new group of rookies has fit in as the team continues to work together in OTAs.

“Jordan [Matthews] has done a nice job since he’s gotten here,” Kelly said of the receiver, the Birds’ second-round pick. “Obviously for all the rookies it’s getting acclimated with what we are doing in terms of schemes and learning new terminology but you get great effort and a consistent approach on a daily basis from what he gives you.”

Matthews has been the topic of conversation when it comes to the offensive newcomers, but on the defensive side, surprise first round pick Marcus Smith is the talk of camp.

The pass-rusher from Louisville is learning Connor Barwin’s position, but Kelly is noncommittal when it comes to determining where, and how much Smith will play this season.

“It’s trying to figure out what those guys can do and what their skill set is and what their strengths and weaknesses are, and then we’ll go from there,” Kelly said.

Kelly is also extremely excited about the play of off-season signee Malcom Jenkins.

“He’s been outstanding and I said that the last time I talked to you guys; his ability, because he’s played multiple positions in this league, he’s been a corner, he’s been a safety. … He’s become the vocal leader on the back end for us, so we are excited to see where he’s going.

The Eagles have a few more OTAs before the official start of mini-camp begins next week in South Philly.
